For over 20 years since its establishment, Huayou Cobalt has regarded social public welfare as a pivotal mission. The company is committed to sharing its development achievements with society, contributing to the establishment of a harmonious society, and aspiring to become a role model for advancing common prosperity.

In December 2022, to commemorate its 20th anniversary, the company donated CNY 50 million to establish the Huayou Charity Shared Prosperity Fund. This fund is dedicated to the development of picturesque rural areas, the construction of research and education facilities, and providing assistance to families in need. In July 2022, on the 10th anniversary of the Huayou Quzhou Industrial Park, the company invested CNY 20 million to establish the Shared Prosperity Charity Fund. Over the past decade, the industrial park has provided over 10,000 local job opportunities, significantly boosting the local economy. In 2022, Huayou continued its commitment to supporting education by establishing the Huayou CNY 10 Million Endowment Fund for the fourth consecutive year in Tongxiang. The company's generous contribution of CNY 500,000 was entirely devoted to philanthropic endeavors, specifically aimed at supporting needy students in Tongxiang to pursue higher education and fulfill their aspirations. Furthermore, for the second consecutive year, 2022 witnessed Huayou's establishment of the "Chongxue Award" within the Development Zone (Gaoqiao Street). The company once again demonstrated its commitment with a significant contribution of CNY 330,000. This entire amount was utilized to recognize and honor exceptionally accomplished elementary and secondary school students falling under the jurisdiction of the Development Zone (Gaoqiao Street).

Revitalizing rural areas 

In proactive response to the national rural revitalization strategy and as a contribution to Zhejiang's high-quality development and shared prosperity demonstration area, Huayou Cobalt donated approximately CNY 2.49 million to support the Wan's automated chicken farming assistance project in Wanyao Township, Jiangshan City. This project is aimed to boost collective and individual incomes, stimulate the local economy, and result in an annual income increase of CNY 150,000 for the village and CNY 50,000 for local households.

Establishing agricultural demonstration zones

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) faces challenges in agricultural production and is identified as one of the world's most food-insecure nations by the International Food and Agriculture Organization. Eliminating extreme poverty and hunger stands among the United Nations' sustainable development goals and represents a fundamental facet of corporate social responsibility. In January 2011, the company signed a collaborative agricultural project agreement with Zhejiang University and the University of Lubumbashi. This led to the establishment of a modern agricultural demonstration park in Lubumbashi, the capital of Upper Katanga Province, Congo (DRC), with an investment of USD 8 million. The modern agricultural park now spans nearly 1,700 acres, featuring 5,000 square meters of intelligent glass greenhouses, 100 acres of contiguous greenhouses, seven specialized zones, and thirteen pivotal agricultural initiatives. The introduction of Chinese rice, vegetables, chickens, and pigs, combined with local farmers being trained in techniques and methodologies, has boosted local agricultural development. This serves as both a demonstration and an assurance for regional self-sufficiency in food and vegetables.

Under the South-South cooperation framework, on August 2, 2017, a group of 13 experts and technicians appointed by China's Ministry of Agriculture arrived at Huayou's agricultural demonstration park in Congo (DRC), signifying the formal launch of the FAO-Huayou Cobalt foreign agricultural aid project.

Recognizing education as a cornerstone of development, our company has been steadfastly committed to fostering quality education. We have consistently contributed to educational initiatives, extending support to schools to ensure the quality of education, while also empowering students to excel in their academic pursuits. Our approach entails not only providing essential resources but also nurturing a sense of encouragement and determination among both educators and learners. By doing so, we aspire to create an environment where teachers and students alike feel valued, equipped to surmount challenges, and inspired by transformative education. 

Since 2016, the CDM Company has been a proud benefactor of the Bon Pasteur School in Kolwezi, offering annual supplies worth approximately USD 30,000 to aid in their educational endeavors. 

Even in the face of the disruptions brought on by the global pandemic in 2020, our commitment to philanthropy remained unwavering. On September 26, amidst the world's tumult, we extended a helping hand by donating essential supplies to the Rukuni Orphanage Center.

Empowering communities with solar water wells

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, access to clean water has been a long-standing challenge for the communities connected to our operations at CDM Company. The region has grappled with limited access to clean water due to the combination of high local drilling costs and widespread poverty among villagers. This has resulted in a reliance on a few aging hand-pumped wells that are prone to collapse, inefficient in water extraction, and time-consuming, leaving the villagers struggling to meet their water needs. Addressing this pressing issue, which has persisted for far too long, became a priority for us. In response, we have consistently allocated dedicated funds to construct communal solar-powered water wells. 

Each well undergoes rigorous quality testing before and after construction to ensure it meets stringent standards. This commitment is a testament to our dedication to providing safe and efficient water sources to communities like KAWAMA, KAMATETE, and the LUKUNI welfare center. Through these efforts, we aim to significantly enhance water availability, improve efficiency, and relieve the burden of water scarcity that has weighed on these communities.

In November 2022, Huayou Cobalt took a significant step towards nurturing talent and driving economic growth through the Industry-University-Research Collaboration Strategic Summit held in Indonesia. During this event, strategic cooperation agreements were inked for talent development. 

Partnering with esteemed institutions such as the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Northeastern University, Gadjah Mada University, Bandung Institute of Technology, and Universitas Ronggolawe, Huayou Cobalt forged memorandums of understanding that span diverse facets of talent development. 

Leveraging our integrated industrial strengths, we have committed ourselves to bolstering Indonesian talent system. By enhancing the resilience and security of our supply chains and promoting collaboration in talent development, we aim to support the convergence of Indonesian industrial chain and innovation chain. Through these endeavors, we are poised to contribute to Indonesian ascent as a global hub for lithium-ion energy expertise and innovation, making strides in both industry and socio-economic development.

Access to electricity has long eluded the communities surrounding CDM Company, posing a persistent challenge. Given the prohibitive costs of electrification and the prevailing poverty within these villages, the quest for reliable electricity remained elusive. To combat this issue, we committed specialized funding to electrify the Rukuni welfare center.  The transformation commenced in March 2021, culminating in its official connection to electricity by June the same year. This pioneering initiative has significantly ameliorated the electricity predicament for the neighboring community, earning heartfelt appreciation from local residents.

Huayou actively engages in cobalt industry conferences and forums, sharing and providing updates on the progress of our responsible supply chain management initiatives. Our company passionately urges stakeholders across the cobalt industry to come together, taking collective accountability and collaboratively fostering a more sustainable and robust cobalt supply chain. 

The responsible supply chain management project undertaken by Huayou in the African Congo serves as a viable solution for the conscientious management of key metals within the emerging new energy lithium-ion industry. This accomplishment earned Huayou the distinction of being the first Chinese company to be invited to address the United Nations Forum on Business and Human Rights Annual Conference, specifically focusing on the theme of corporate social responsibility. During this conference, the company spotlighted its achievements, with special emphasis on its contributions in Africa.

Since 2016, Huayou Cobalt has been invited to make a speech at the Annual Conference of Responsible Mineral Supply Chain of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), introducing the practical experience and construction progress of the company's cobalt supply chain due management project. Huayou Cobalt's six-step framework for the project was formally adopted and will be used in due diligence guidance.
